Orange-Ginger Elequil Aromatabs Aromatherapy Makes its Debut

When it comes to introducing a new aroma within the Elequil Aromatabs® product line, it is not a decision taken lightly. We listen to customer feedback to determine trends and look for ways to offer a solution based on what we are hearing. Our customers have been asking for a solution for queasiness that does not have limitations or contraindications and can be offered to almost any patient. This inspired Elequil Aromatabs newest aroma, Orange-Ginger, to uplift and soothe queasiness.

Why specific oils are chosen for Elequil Aromatabs aromatherapy

Elequil Aromatabs aromatherapy was designed specifically for the clinical setting. Aromas have been formulated to help patients by providing a non-pharmacological alternative or adjunct to their care. It also serves as a nursing intervention that does not require a doctor’s order.

Prior to Orange-Ginger, there were four aromas available, Lavender, Lavender-Sandalwood, Lavender-Peppermint, and Orange-Peppermint.

Lavender helps with relaxation during pain, helps comfort, and calms anxiousness and lasts up to 8 hours. When combined with Sandalwood, the lasting power increases to up to 24 hours.
Orange essential oil can help for its ability to uplift moods, while peppermint helps to soothe queasiness.

A need for an alternate oil to soothe queasiness for certain patient types

While peppermint is very effective for patients experiencing queasiness, there are a few contraindications to keep in mind. Products containing menthol, the dominant constituent in peppermint oil, have been implicated in cardiac fibrillation in predisposed patients and are recommended to be avoided even through inhalation with such individuals (Tisserand & Young, 2014).

Rationale for such recommendations appears to stem from case study evidence of idiopathic atrial fibrillation due to the consumption of peppermint candies ("JoDrugs. PEPPERMINT OIL", 2021) with Tisserand and Young (2014) citing links to mentholated cigarettes causing fibrillation issues as well. These same authors likewise contraindicate peppermint oil via all routes of application, including inhalation, in people with G6DP deficiency. This is likely due to research showing potential cytotoxic effects on erythrocytes.

It is important to note that of the oils contained within Elequil aromatabs, peppermint is the only one that is contraindicated, and its contraindications are specific to cardiac fibrillation and G6PD deficiency. Peppermint can be safely used via inhalation in the case of other cardiac conditions.

In consideration to the information presented in this statement, the essential oils used in Elequil aromatabs are safe options for use in the case of cardiac conditions with only the Orange-Peppermint and Lavender-Peppermint aromatabs being contraindicated in cases of cardiac fibrillation and G6PD deficiency.

In addition, peppermint essential oils are not recommended for children under three.

Despite Orange-Peppermint and Lavender-Peppermint aroma being customer favorites, there were some patients that could not use and therefore benefit from Elequil Aromatab’s ability to help with queasiness due to these conditions. While we have not had any complaints of patient complications, we understand that some hospitals want the safest option possible.

Introducing Orange-Ginger

374_Closed_hiDPIOur Research & Development and Marketing teams worked with Sr. Clinical Product Specialist and Certified Aromatherapist, Laura Smith, to combine the perfect blend that has quickly become a favorite amongst Beekley Medical associates.

Using Ginger essential oil was the obvious choice knowing that eating ginger encourages the relief of queasiness. According to Johns Hopkins Wellness & Prevention web page, eating ginger has a range of health benefits.*

Creating the new blend took months to develop between selecting the best source of ginger and determining the perfect blend of orange and ginger. Smell tests were conducted with Beekley Associates and customers weighed in on how it helped their patients with queasiness.

Orange-Ginger was introduced at various surgical conferences in early 2024 where the audience was very receptive to the new blend to help patients with reduction of PONV and potentially an earlier discharge which helps the patient have a better experience.

374_Place_On-Gown_hiDPIOrange-Ginger lasts up to 8 hours. Elequil Aromatabs unique delivery system makes it very patient-friendly and customizable with its minimum and maximum aroma exposure options that stays within one’s own personal space. It can also be transferred to the patient’s clothing upon discharge.
